对白 (Dialogue)- 2020

My work was partly inspired by an ancient poem written over one thousand years ago. When you read out the first half of a well-known poem to the Chinese-version Siri of your iPhone, she is most likely going to read the second half. So, I created the work “Dialog” by using this function. In Dialog, I am holding an iPhone and read poems to Siri. More precisely, I am reading one verse at a time, and Siri will give me the second verse, so we are chanting ancient poems back and forth. I chose “Chun Jiang Hua Yue Ye (Moonlit River In Spring)” by a poet from Tang Dynasty, Zhang Ruoxu. First of all, this poem is about wandering nostalgia, and I am, too, one of the many students who are far away from home.

Secondly, it is an artistically great work, which not only has touching details, but also incorporates a broad view of the cosmos. I wanted to be connected with this great work of art, just like what the poem has depicted, "江畔何人初见月,江月何年初照人 (Who on the riverbank sees the moon first, and when did the moonlight shines on people for the first time?)." The poet, standing on the riverside, was not thinking about himself, but wondering who of the many lived in this world, saw the moon first. Soon, his thoughts soared up to the universe and imagined how the first beam of moonlight shone on the face of a person. Such unrestrained time-space view is something I want to be connected with artistically.

Nicolas Bourriaud gave some inspirational note on loneliness by saying “The feeling of loneliness is never represented by the ‘1’,but the absence of the ‘2’. This is exactly why I introduced Siri. But Siri is just a indifferent technology, yet I am often emotionally attached to ancient Chinese poems. When I was standing alone on the riverside of Rhine in Düsseldorf, chanting “Chun Jiang Hua Yue Ye” with Siri, my heart was like a ball of steaming sparkles in spite of Siri’s cold voice.
